4. Harvey Updyke

We all remember the caller on the Finebaum Show in 2011 who made the decision to call into the Finebaum Show to let the world know that he had poisoned the two trees at Toomer’s Corner on Auburn’s campus in response to the Tide losing to Cam Newton and the Tigers.

Harvey Updyke obviously is still facing legal issues over that. But let’s not forget how many lines this crossed.

Updyke was set over the edge because his Tide gave away a 24-0 lead to lose to Newton and the Tigers 28-27, and he could not get over a Cam Newton jersey being placed on the Bear Bryant statue. Of course, you can take off the jersey with no harm, but in Updyke’s mind, the proper response is to do irreparable harm to somebody else’s property.

Oh, and did we forget that he claimed to do it also in response to an alleged rumor that Auburn rolled the trees at the corner after Bryant passed away? There is no report confirming that, as Finebaum mentioned. It’s probably just some rumor started by another angry Alabama fan.

And the worst part about this is many of the fans. Updyke is not the exception. He is part of the mainstream, and plenty of Alabama fans made it a point to support him.

Remember how they all begged us not to judge them by Updyke’s actions?

Well, there have been plenty of Tide fans on social media supporting Updyke, and there was even a sign at last year’s Iron Bowl saying  “Harvey Updyke for President.” And no fan next to the person with that sign bothered to stop him.

So no, I’m not going to let the fan base off the hook for Updyke. He seems representative of a large portion of the group.
