3. 2003: Tennessee Wins 51-43 in 5 Overtimes

This one should not have been nearly as close as it was. In the midst of their probation and with a new head coach, Alabama was decimated by scholarship reductions and was barely able to field a team. For the year, they went 4-9.

Meanwhile, behind senior quarterback Casey Clausen, Tennessee was to contend for the SEC Championship. But after a 4-0 start, two losses at Auburn and at home against Georgia had the Vols in trouble.

Coming off of a bye week, they were supposed to get back on track against Alabama. But their play was hideous on offense.

Alabama had a 6-3 halftime lead, but thankfully for the Vols, the defense had played tough. Jason Allen, in his breakout game, blocked a field goal that Mike Shula elected to go for on fourth and short. That would be a huge difference.

In the second half, a James Banks run made it 10-6, but after a 13-6 lead, Alabama scored two touchdowns to make it 20-13. However, after a blocked field goal in the first half, they went for it on fourth and short in the second half, and Tennessee stopped them. Then with a 20-13 lead and only needing a first down on fourth and inches, the Tide sent out the punt team.

  • Tennessee was almost caught with 12 men on the field, but the ball was snapped too late. Anyway, Clausen finally got back on track and led the Vols on a long, game-tying drive to send it to overtime.

The team exchanged touchdowns in the first overtime, and then Alabama took a 34-27 lead in the second overtime and forced Tennessee into a 4th and 19 play. But against a zone defense and a three-man rush, Clausen found C.J. Fayton in what might have been the play of the year to convert, and they tied the game two plays later.

The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the third overtime and field goals in the fourth, and then Tennessee took a 51-43 lead in the fifth. On fourth and short the next play, Jason Allen batted away a pass from Brody Croyle into the end zone to secure the victory for the Vols. It was ugly, but Tennessee prevailed.

And it got them on a role, as they won out to finish the year 10-2. The magnitude of this win wasn’t much. But the game itself was thrilling. And that is why it is on here.
