Slot Receiver

Willie Gault

Just like the fullback position, the slot receiver is another spot that is not a solidified official football position. But opposite the fullback spot, it’s an emerging position, not a dying one.

Anyway, that made it more important for us to add a slot receiver, and in this case, our slot receiver is one of the greatest speed stars ever to put on a Tennessee uniform: Willie Gault.

Gault was part of the transition in bringing Tennessee back into the national spotlight, but he never got to enjoy the fruits of what he and his teammates helped build. Still, he was an integral part of the process.

A deadly kick returner and pass catcher, Gault was always scary with the ball and helped earn Tennessee the title Wide Receiver U under Johnny Majors. As an All-American and track and field star, he represented Tennessee well in college.

His NFL career only added to it.

Gault was an 11-year player in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Raiders, and he was a Super Bowl champion as a major part of the 1985 Bears, widely regarded as the greatest team in NFL history.

That type of career for this speedster as a little guy makes him the perfect fit to be the slot receiver for the Vols.
