More pathetic shooting cost the Tennessee basketball Volunteers Saturday as they lost to a terrible TCU Horned Frogs team 75-63 in the SEC-Big 12 Challenge.

Another game, another terrible shooting percentage from the Tennessee Vols. And once again, it resulted in an epic second-half collapse and another blown lead that makes Tennessee football’s blown leads in the early part of this past season look tame.

The Volunteers blew a 41-27 halftime lead to the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth Saturday afternoon and fell to 10-11 on the season. This was an embarrassing loss as well.

TCU was 9-11 going into the game.

But, in what seems to be Rick Barnes’s only strategy for the Vols in his first season on the job, their three-point shooting collapsed in the second half, as they went 0-for-13 to finish the game 8-for-31 on the game.

A field goal percentage of 34.3 and three-point percentage of 25.8 would cost any team, especially a team like the Vols who have no inside game.

Tennessee was doomed in the second half with Robert Hubbs III and Armani Moore getting into foul trouble early and then Moore fouling out. Hubbs finished the game 1-for-7 with two points, while Moore had a solid night going 4-for-10 with 10 points, six assists, and seven rebounds.

Kevin Punter once again led the Vols in scoring with 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting, but he was 3-of-11 from the three-point line.

However, not to only dwell on the atrocious three-point shooting in this game, the Vols’ second-half defense was also embarrassing.

They allowed 48 points to an awful TCU basketball team, despite the Horned Frogs only shooting 41.8 percent from the field.

Why would that happen?

Well, it started with the large amounts of missed threes. Follow that up with their inability to get back in transition and fouling too often, and you have those awful numbers.

There’s no way around saying this, but the Vols are getting inexplicably worse. Their defense has regressed over the past week, and their offense is becoming more one-dimensional, relying on the Law of Averages.

Is it already time to give Rick Barnes some criticism even though he’s in his first year with the Vols?

Probably not, but it would be nice to see a few more offensive plays called and a little more efficiency in the half-court game.
