Tennessee football recruiting for 2016 was about addressing specific needs for the future. Here are the five most underrated players the Volunteers signed.

It happens every year. All schools have some surprises in their recruiting classes, some of whom were pleasant surprises and others who were major disappointments.

Every Tennessee football recruiting class has been that way as well.

So, inevitably, the 2016 National Signing Day class has players who will be both. There are certainly a few four-stars who will be busts for the Vols.

But there are plenty of players who could surprise the experts.

So much of recruiting depends on the system you are in. Teams like the Wisconsin Badgers have a specific system and have always done a good job finding players to fit that system, and it shows in the NFL with plenty of solid players from the school making major impacts.

Tennessee’s 2016 recruiting class was ranked No. 15 in the country, but the only reason it was not higher was due to the fact that the Vols could not sign as many people as they had the previous years. So Butch Jones and the Tennessee coaching staff focused on filling needs.

That forced him to stress quality over quantity and make sure he found undervalued guys, so he might have actually found a few more underrated players than he usually finds in classes.

With only 21 signees and plenty of highly recruited players, it’s a little hard to decipher the class too much. But there are still some guys who seem a bit underrated.
