Tennessee football still is in play with wide receiver Ryan Jones. Jones committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels but plans to visit the Volunteers.

Once the leader for four-star Class of 2017 recruit Ryan Jones, the Tennessee Vols appear to still have a chance. Despite the fact that the 6’2″ 201-pound receiver has been committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels for nearly three months.

But he did have Tennessee as his top choice for a while, and Butch Jones is still pursuing him.

According to Ryan Callahan of 247Sports, he still plans to visit Knoxville. Here’s an excerpt from the article.

"The four-star junior athlete from Charlotte’s Mallard Creek High School said he still talks with the Vols’ coaches “a lot,” and he’s planning to visit Tennessee soon — perhaps within the next few weeks — and return there on an official visit later this year despite his commitment to North Carolina."

Jones and Mike DeBord clearly like to use lots of wide receivers in their system and focus hard on recruiting them. They already have one commitment in K.D. Nixon for 2017 and nailed three commitments for the 2016 class, setting them up well for the future.

But they are not going to want to let up at that position. To be fair, North Carolina may be the better spot for Jones to shine playing with less competition for playing time and thriving in Larry Fedora’s system. But the quarterback position there has a much more uncertain future.

And the Vols give him the best chance to play for championships. Maybe Butch Jones can get him to flip. There is still plenty of time.
