Tennessee softball took both games of a doubleheader series Sunday. The Vols beat the No. 3 ranked Auburn Tigers at home twice.
Ralph and Karen Weekly’s team got a huge break after their Vols were struggling in Game One against the Auburn Tigers already an inning and a half into it Saturday night. But rain postponed that game until Sunday.
And they enjoyed a huge Sunday, topping the Tigers twice to assure they would win the series, their last home series of the year and most important series of the regular season.
The No. 13 ranked Vols went on a tear Sunday afternoon offensively to take both huge wins.
Going into this series, it was clear Tennessee would need power and production from its top hitters, and Megan Greer came through first on Sunday, going two for two with a walk, a run, and four RBIs. Lexi Overstreet and Rainey Gaffin each drove in two runs as well.
Meanwhile, Gaffin also pitched two scoreless innings to close the game following a solid performance by starter Matty Moss, who allowed two runs in three innings pitched, doing her best against a loaded Auburn offense.
In the next game, the power continued as the Vols dominated en route to a 12-1 victory, cashing in on five errors committed by the Tigers.
Brooke Vines led the offense in that game, going three for four with two RBIs and a run. Overstreet once again performed, driving in two runs and scoring one, and Shaliyah Geathers also drove in two runs and scored two more. Gaffin added another run, and Gretchen Aucoin went two-for-three with two more runs scored.
Erin Gabriel dominated the game on the mound as well in this game, only allowing one run.
With the wins, Tennessee moves to 38-12 on the year and 15-6 in the SEC, and Auburn falls to to 45-7 and 15-5 in the SEC.
Sweeping the doubleheader was huge for the Vols, assuring that they would win the series against the No. 3 Tigers and proving that they are national title contenders.
