After being swept by the worst team in the SEC, Tennessee baseball is looking for a miracle. The Volunteers have that chance against the Florida Gators.

The call for Dave Serrano to be fired has been placed, and Tennessee baseball is in the same sad state it was five years ago as Todd Raleigh was on his way out the door.

After being swept by the Missouri Tigers last week, the Vols are last-place in the SEC at 24-21 overall and 6-15 in the conference, and at best they will only finish .500.

Simply put, to meet the requirements that were put forth for Dave Serrano to keep his job at the beginning of the year, a miracle must happen. That miracle includes a sweep of the No. 1 ranked Florida Gators this weekend.

Serrano’s Vols have been very good at home, to be fair, taking two out of three against the No. 3 ranked Vanderbilt Commodores two weeks ago. But their small-ball style of play with aggressive base running cost them in a four-game losing streak after that.

And it’s likely to cost them again.

Florida is the second-best defensive team in the country, and they rarely make errors. That will severely limit what the Vols can do once they get on the bases, and just like they were all last week, they will constantly be stranded.

The only way Tennessee can win this series is if they get some power in the bats. Oh, and the relief pitchers have to show up as well.

If those two things happen, this will be a series considering the Vols are playing at home. But both things happening would be a miracle. And then the Vols would need even more luck to sweep the Gators.

So with little more than pride to play for at this point, Tennessee has a chance to show just how much magic it can produce down the stretch of the season, starting with Florida.

The first pitch Friday is set for 6 p.m.
