Top 10 All Time Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball Teams
1. 1997-1998 Tennessee Lady Vols (39-0, SEC Regular Season Championship, SEC Tournament Championship, National Championship)
No matter how many undefeated seasons Geno Auriemma has, it is unlikely he will ever have a UConn Huskies team that was as good as this Tennessee Lady Vols team. Perhaps if he plays the tough schedule this team has, he will have a chance. Otherwise, it’s not happening.
Tennessee entered the season ranked No. 1 in the country after a Cinderella season to win the national championship the year before. This team returned Chamique Holdsclaw, the best player in college basketball, from the year before and other key scorers, and Summitt managed to mix them in with an amazing recruiting class in players like Tamika Catchings and Semeka Randall.
The mesh of talent was amazing and on the level of what John Calipari had in the 2014-2015 Kentucky Wildcats, except for the fact that Summitt could actually coach in big games.
The tone was set in the second game of the season, when the Lady Vols knocked off the No. 2 ranked Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters with a 75-61 victory. They never let up and never lost their No. 1 ranking.
The result was a 39-0 season with the No. 1 ranked schedule in the country, something that should be impossible to do in college basketball. What’s more is the fact that only two teams even came within 10 points of the Lady Vols: the Alabama Crimson Tide twice and the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Elite Eight NCAA Tournament match-up.
Make no mistake, this is the greatest team ever. Sure, Auriemma’s most recent Huskies team blew out opponents by more than this Lady Vols team. But they had nowhere near the same grueling schedule.
So the nod goes to this Lady Vols team.
And if it’s the greatest team of all time, it’s certainly the greatest team in Tennessee women’s basketball history.
