9. 1993-1994 Tennessee lady Vols (31-2, SEC Regular Season Championship, SEC Tournament Championship, NCAA Sweet 16)

This is the unit more than any other that blew a shot at a national championship game. Pat Summitt was coaching a group of veterans led by Nikki McCray, Nikki Caldwell, Latina Davis and Vonda Ward.

Also, Michelle Marciniak had transferred to the team and was playing her first year in Knoxville.

Three years removed from her third national title, this easily should have been Pat Summitt’s fourth, and throughout the year it looked clear that would happen.

Tennessee went 29-1 on the year, losing only to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on the road thanks to one bad half. Outside of that, the Lady Vols were dominant throughout the season and especially throughout SEC play.

Going into the NCAA Tournament, they were the clear favorites to win the national championship, but as a No. 1 seed they were upset in the Sweet Sixteen by the former women’s basketball powerhouse Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters.

The Lady Vols lost the game by three. But while they only made the Sweet Sixteen this year, the fact that the Lady Techsters ended up only losing by one in the National Title game and the fact that they accomplished pretty much everything else with loads of talent means they still belong on this list.
