Top 10 All Time Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball Teams
6. 1990-1991 Tennessee Lady Vols (30-5, National Championship)
This was not the first national title and it was not part of a three-peat or a back-to-back, and it also was not a team that won any conference championship. But it was one of the best teams Pat Summitt ever coached.
Following the 1986-1987 national championship, Summitt had eliminated the proverbial monkey to win another one, and in the 1990-1991 season she was looking for her third with what was clearly a team that could have different leading scorers every night, whether it be Dena Head, Daedra Charles, Jody Adams, Peggy Evans, or even Nikki Caldwell.
This team finished only third in the SEC regular season and lost a close one to the LSU Tigers in the SEC Tournament.
But the Lady Vols still managed to enter the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed. Unlike Summitt’s first national title, though, this run was not easy at all.
The Lady Vols’ method of different scorers saved them in what seemed like a close game every night, with Charles going for 22 points in a close eight-point first round victory agains Southwest Missouri State. Then, Head, Caldwell, Charles, and Kelli Casteel all scored double figures in their second-round victory, a seven-point win against Western Kentucky.
It was Charles again as the Lady Vols squeaked by Auburn 69-65 in the next round, and Lisa Harrison carried the team to an eight-point victory over Stanford. Harrison and Charles led the team to its national title, a 70-67 overtime victory over Virginia.
This tournament was closer, but the regular season and great collection of team players is what puts this team at No. 6.
