A Congressional Medal for Pat Summitt and Tennessee football Fall previews headline the Vols news on Rocky Top for Monday, July 25.


Happy Monday everybody! It’s now time for another political circus, this time the Democratic National Convention. Then we have a three-month general election campaign. Yay politics!

Well, at least you’ll have the Olympics and football to take your mind off of it the entire time. And getting to sports, there’s some semi-political news related to Tennessee athletics for today.

It’s not necessarily good news either.

Meanwhile, we’ll take a look at how things are shaping up for the Fall, including a particular player who just had a feature done on him.

But before we get to football, let’s begin with the political news. And it relates to Pat Summitt.

State rep. ends push for Pat Summitt Congressional Medal – Michael Collins of The Tennessean

"Pat Summitt won many accolades during her legendary coaching career at the University of Tennessee, but she won’t be receiving the Congressional Gold Medal anytime soon.Rep. John J. Duncan Jr., R-Knoxville, said last week he has ended his campaign to bestow the medal upon Summitt because the measure did not have the support it needed in Congress."

"The eyeball test this summer has made it seem like Kahlil McKenzie is trimmer and in better shape. Tennessee’s roster also made it seem that way last week, when it showed McKenzie 20 pounds lighter.First-year Vols defensive coordinator Bob Shoop confirmed the news Friday, though, by saying the huge sophomore defensive tackle is less huge than he was as a true freshman, and that he’s looking better and better heading into preseason camp next week."
