The release of the Coaches Poll, postseason awards, and Jalen Hurd lead the Tennessee Vols news on Rocky Top for Friday, Aug. 5.


Happy Friday to everybody. Tennessee football continues its preseason work in preparation for the 2016 college football season, and that is where we are keeping our focus for today.

There’s a lot of news surrounding the Volunteers for this Friday, starting with a ton of hype generated by a preseason ranking and more awards watch lists.

That has all the fans psyched and ready to go.

Let’s take a look at the Tennessee football news for today as we head into the first weekend in the month of August for this year.

Vols ranked No. 10 in preseason Coaches Poll – USA TODAY Sports

"The Amway Coaches Poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of head coaches at FBS schools. The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate."

Jalen Hurd happy with summer speed work – Wes Rucker of 247Sports

"Jalen Hurd likes the strength and conditioning program at Tennessee, but the Vols’ junior running back also enjoyed stepping outside Knoxville this summer to mix it up a bit.And he’s already loving the results.The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Hurd said he’s feeling stronger and quicker than ever after a summer where he split time working out in Knoxville with Tennessee strength coach Michael Szerszen and on the West Coast with so-called “life, business and football coach” Robert Paulele."

Derek Barnett named to Hendricks Award Watch ListUTSports

"Barnett, who earned All-SEC first-team honors at the 2016 SEC Media Days, is also on the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.A 2015 All-SEC second team selection after ranking third in the conference in sacks (10.0) last season, Barnett enters his junior season tied for eighth in career sacks at Tennessee with 20. He currently trails the legendary Reggie White, UT’s all-time sacks leader, by only 12. Barnett’s 20 sacks are also the most by any Vol through his first two seasons of action."
