News surrounding the Battle at Bristol, football practice, and Vols in the Olympics headline the Tennessee updates on Rocky Top for Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016.


We are exactly three weeks away from the start of football season! If you can’t contain your excitement, feel free to shout it out at any time. All of Vol Nation is ready to do that, especially with the hype surrounding the Tennessee football program this year.

On top of that, it’s also Thursday, meaning that Saturday is almost here! Things can’t get more exciting in Knoxville at this moment.

Oh, and we still have the Olympics to follow.

There’s lots of exciting news going on around the program right now, so let’s get to it. We’ll begin with an update for a game that’s had a two-year buildup.

Trophy unveiled for Battle at Bristol – WBIR

"The Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol is just 30 days away and Bristol Motor Speedway says they’re going to be ready to welcome the tens of thousands of fans for this once-in-a-lifetime game.University of Tennessee Athletics Director Dave Hart on Wednesday joined Virginia Tech Athletics Director Whitt Babcock and Bristol Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Jerry Caldwell to discuss the preparations for the big game and to unveil the winner’s trophy."

Olympics Update: Women’s basketball beats Serbia 110-84 – UTSports

"For the third time in as many games, the United States Olympic Women’s Basketball Team surpassed 100 points, improving to 3-0 in Group B play with a 110-84 victory over Serbia (0-3) at Deodoro Youth Arena.Former Lady Vol Tamika Catchings tallied six points for the USA in 13 minutes of duty. She added three rebounds, three steals and an assist in the win. Catchings hit both of her free throw attempts to help the U.S. connect on 26-of-26 charity tries."

Vols hold first two-a-day practice – Ryan Callahan of 247Sports

"Tennessee opened its first two-a-day of preseason camp Wednesday morning with an approximately 90-minute practice at Haslam Field.The Vols practiced again Wednesday night, but the evening session was closed to media."

Vols DB Darrell Miller no longer with team – AP

"Reserve defensive back Darrell Miller Jr. has left Tennessee’s football team.Tennessee athletic department spokesman Ryan Robinson confirmed Miller’s exit Wednesday. Miller tweeted earlier in the day that “I want to thank the University of Tennessee & the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play at such a prestigious program. I wish nothing but the best to my teammates and the coaching staff.”"
