Tennessee football’s Alexis Johnson being cleared, Jonathan Kongbo, and Saturday’s scrimmage headline the Vols updates on Rocky Top for Friday, Aug. 12.

Happy Friday everybody! Football season finally began Thursday night with the first round of NFL preseason games. Now, despite the Olympics in full force, patriotic Americans are counting down the days until kickoff begins for real games that matter. The same holds true on Rocky Top.

In the college world, the Tennessee Volunteers had some good news coming out of Thursday relating to football. Lots of the coverage surrounding them for today revolves around practice updates.

So as you Vols fans get set to go into the weekend with plans to likely enjoy the Olympics and more preseason football while also getting tortured by the election news, we’ll continue to bring you the updates for Tennessee football.

Let’s begin that today with the stroke of good news surrounding one potential player.

Junior college DT Alexis Johnson cleared of charges, still suspended – John Brice of 247Sports

"Tennessee Vols junior college signee Alexis Johnson saw the University of Tennessee’s student conduct board rule that allegations of domestic violence against Johnson were “unfounded,” Knoxville-based attorney Greg Isaacs confirmed to media via statement.Johnson, a former 247Sports three-star signee from Fort Scott Community College (Kansas), had been accused in the incident in February. Johnson pleaded to reduced charges, which can be fully wiped from his record if he completes a six-month probationary period incident-free."

Jonathan Kongbo learning to understand football concepts – Mike Griffith of SEC Country

"Kongbo, a 6-6, 282-pounder with a rare blend of size, length, power and speed, likely has not studied Shoop’s concepts or history that closely.Kongbo is talented, but the 20-year-old Congo native did not play football until his senior year of high school in British Columbia, and his college experience is limited between two brief stops at Wyoming and Arizona Western."

Tennessee coordinators speak on Saturday’s scrimmage – Jonathan Toye of USA TODAY Network

"Tennesseedefensive coordinator Bob Shoop and offensive coordinator Mike DeBord touched on the same subject Thursday. Both coordinators agreed that Saturday’s closed scrimmage at Neyland Stadium is going to be significant for both sides of the ball."
