Dave Hart retiring, Vols in the Olympics, a football injury and a practice report headlined the Tennessee news on Rocky Top for Friday, Aug. 19, 2016.


Happy Friday everybody! You can go into this weekend knowing that the start of Tennessee football season is less than two weeks. That of course has everybody excited on Rocky Top, but there’s now some huge news to talk about leading up to that.

The biggest story of the day in Knoxville was also a huge Dave Hart announcement, which we’ll cover in our morning roundup of news today. Also, the Olympics is still continuing, although it’s drawing to a close.

And in addition to already having one gold medalist, another former Vol is fighting for another. Fortunately, nobody in Knoxville has to worry about being embarrassed by the U.S. swimmers.

Finally, there’s still a bit of football news to get to. On Thursday, however, it wasn’t good news. We’ll take a look at that as well.

But let’s start with the big story of the morning.

Dave Hart announces retirement at Vols AD – UTSports

"Tennessee Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Dave Hart, who is entering his sixth year at the helm of the Volunteer Athletics program, announced Thursday that he will retire from the position of Director of Athletics, effective June 30, 2017.In accepting Hart’s decision to retire, UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said, “Dave’s greatest accomplishment is making UT a student-athlete-focused department."

Vols OT Chance Hall to miss four to six weeks – ESPN.com

"Tennessee offensive tackle Chance Hall has had arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to miss four to six weeks.Volunteers coach Butch Jones announced Hall’s injury and gave the potential timetable for his return Thursday."

"Tennessee didn’t practice Wednesday to allow players to focus on the start of fall-semester classes, and coach Butch Jones was eager to see how his players would respond Thursday in their return to the field.He was happy with their effort, but not with their execution."

Bartoletta staked the USA to a lead after one leg, but the baton was dropped in the second exchange as Allyson Felix was bumped trying to hand off to English Gardner."
