Tennessee football head coach Butch Jones named Volunteers sophomore quarterback Quinten Dormady as Joshua Dobbs’s backup against Appalachian State.
Tennessee football’s first and second string quarterbacks will be exact opposites in 2016…at least for the opener. Vols coach Butch Jones named Quinten Dormady as Josh Dobbs’s backup quarterback against the Appalachian State Mountaineers.

Jones said on a 247Sports report that Dormady had his best practice Monday.
Throughout last year, Dormady served as the No. 2 quarterback behind Dobbs and completed 13 of 22 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown in garbage time for five games.
While Dobbs is a dual-threat quarterback, Dormady is more of a typical pocket passer. The once-highly rated Texas recruit stands at 6’4″ and over 215 pounds. He can fling the football from the pocket with ease.
Dormady will likely compete with Sheriron Jones and Jarrett Guarantano next offseason to be Dobbs’s replacement as the next starting Tennessee football quarterback.
Guarantano generated lots of Fall Camp hype beyond Dormady, though, leading many to believe that he is the future quarterback for the Vols.
However, going into this year, Dormady is the only one of the three with significant familiarity in the system. Jones left the program for a period of time last year, and Guarantano is a true freshman.
As a result, he was the obvious option to back up Dobbs.
That doesn’t give him an advantage, however, next offseason. Actually, it could mean that Jones would rather redshirt Guarantano instead of waste a year on him. After all, he tried to that with Dobbs in 2014 before injuries to Justin Worley forced his hand.

Either way, Dormady is the backup quarterback this year. At least it’s an entertaining change of pace that could keep defenses off balance if his number is ever called.
