Tennessee football defensive line updates, helmet changes, and soccer stories headline the Volunteers news on Rocky Top for Monday, Aug. 29, 2016.


We’re finally here on Rocky Top! Preparations for the first Tennessee football game have begun. Meanwhile, the Vols are already performing in other sports which we’ll also get to.

As we get set to bring you updates about the Volunteers, there was quite a bit of good news over the weekend.

The release of the depth chart was a big deal Saturday, and then came a few surprises.

Let’s start with the football news related to the depth chart.

Bob Shoop gives updates on three defensive linemen – Ryan Callahan of 247Sports

"It’s not clear how much Tennessee defensive linemen Shy Tuttle, Kyle Phillips, and Alexis Johnson might be able to play in the Vols’ season opener.Tuttle, Phillips and Johnson have shown improvement recently after being limited participants in some preseason practices, and first-year Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said Sunday night that all three are “going to have to contribute, to a certain extent,” Thursday night against Appalachian State at Neyland Stadium."

Vols to wear Pat Summitt decal on helmets – Grant Ramey of the Knoxville News Sentinel

"The Tennessee football team this season will wear a helmet decal to honor the late Pat Summitt, the legendary Tennessee women’s basketball coach who died on June 28 after a five-year fight with Alzheimer’s.“We’re excited about wearing a commemorative sticker on the back of our helmet to honor the late Pat Summitt,” fourth-year coach Butch Jones said. “We know everything she stands for. I think it’s very fitting that Tennessee football and Team 120 recognize her and everything she means to the University of Tennessee and state of Tennessee.”"

Vols women’s soccer defeats ETSU – UTSports

"Rylie O’Keefe stole the show in Tennessee’s 3-2 win over East Tennessee State on Sunday night at Regal Soccer Stadium, scoring the game-winning goal and posting a career-high four points in the victory.O’Keefe had a hand in all three Volunteer goals, including a free kick in the 62nd minute that proved to be the game-winner for the Vols as they improved to 5-0 all-time against ETSU."
