A drop in polls, preparation for Virginia Tech, and the Tennessee men’s basketball schedule lead the Volunteers updates on Rocky Top for Wednesday, Sept. 7.


After breathing a sigh of relief following the Appalachian State game last Thursday, Rocky Top is fully in Battle at Bristol mode now.

The coaches have players focused on that game, but that doesn’t change what the national media is saying about the Vols now, particularly the rankings.

Those two things lead the news for Tennessee football today. We are inching closer and closer to that epic Battle at Bristol match-up everybody. And now that it’s hump day, the epic game is in sight.

By the way, there’s also some men’s basketball news to get to today. But let’s start with football.

Vols defense sees room for improvement – Ryan Callahan of 247Sports

"Tennessee held Appalachian State scoreless throughout the second half and overtime Thursday night, but the Vols’ defense didn’t play perfectly in their season opener.Sophomore linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. said Tuesday that he and his teammates need to improve in at least a few areas leading up to Saturday’s “Battle at Bristol” against Virginia Tech (1-0) at Bristol Motor Speedway."

Vols offense to ‘prepare’ defense for Hokies – Ryan Callahan of 247Sports

"Virginia Tech’s uptempo offense will present a difference challenge for Tennessee’s defense Saturday night compared to what the Vols faced last week in their season-opening win over Appalachian State.But it won’t be anything new for them."

Men’s SEC Basketball schedule released – UTSports

"The Southeastern Conference released the men’s basketball schedule for the upcoming season Tuesday, completing Tennessee’s 31-game regular-season slate.In addition to “permanent opponents” Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt, Tennessee also will face Mississippi State and Ole Miss both at home and on the road this season."
