News on Tennessee football players along with a feature on their schedule headline the Volunteers updates on Rocky Top for Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016.

Happy Thursday! We are now set to begin Week Three of the college football season, and getting to 3-0 is the focus on Rocky Top.

Everybody should pay attention to night to an epic Group of Five match-up between the Houston Cougars and Cincinnati Bearcats. This is a dangerous game for Houston, and Vols fans want to see them lose so they can move up.

Speaking of Group of Five teams, how have they been giving SEC teams headaches recently? That’s one of our feature stories for today.

And there’s also quite a bit of news surrounding player.

So let’s get to that news on Rocky Top first.

Vols’ Jonathan Kongbo happy with ‘smoother’ second game – Wes Rucker of 247Sports

"College football slowed down for Jonathan Kongbo in his second career game, and Tennessee’s highly touted defensive end expects that trend to continue.Kongbo said Wednesday night on Vol Calls — Tennessee’s weekly call-in show featuring coaches and, now, players — that everything felt “smoother” against Virginia Tech than it did against Appalachian State, and that he thinks the Ohio game will be another step in that direction."

Josh Malone proving to be durable this season – Knoxville News Sentinel

"Tennessee junior wide receiver Josh Malone has played every snap through Tennessee’s first two games.“He can run all day. He’s taking care of himself,” Vols wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni said. “That’s what it’s all about at this level.”Azzanni grades the wide receivers separately on blocking, and considered the Virginia Tech performance an improvement."

Mid-majors have been a headache for Vols – John Adams of USA TODAY Network

"Proponents of parity loved the first week of the college football season. And they didn’t have to look any farther than the SEC for thrills.South Alabama upset Mississippi State, Louisiana Tech lost by one point to Arkansas, and Appalachian State took Tennessee into overtime before losing."

Vols’ QB Sheriron Jones says he’s got that ‘dog’ – John Brice of 247Sports

"Sheriron Jones hasn’t yet been hit in practice by teammate Jonathan Kongbo, but Jones is open to the possibility.Speaking on Vol Calls Wednesday night, Tennessee’s fourth-string quarterback and bench leader made clear he welcomes all challenges.“No, not yet,” Jones said of being hit by Kongbo, who noted quarterbacks are off-limits. “Yeah, to get the jitters out (he would welcome a collision with Kongbo). That’s what I’m into … you know I’m a dog.”"
