Tennessee football head coach Butch Jones said that injured Volunteers cornerback Cameron Sutton will be out for an “extended period of time.”
Tennessee football just lost one of its top leaders and one of its top defensive players for a while.
Following the Vols’ 28-19 victory over the Ohio Bobcats, Butch Jones said that Sutton would be out for an “extended period of time.”
Here are his full quotes on Sutton, per UTSports.
"“Cam Sutton will be out for an extended period of time. I will know a little bit more tomorrow. I feel for him and his family. This is an individual who is a role model for what a student-athlete is and what it takes to prepare week-in and week-out. You give me 11 [players like] Cam Sutton, and we will win a lot of football games. It is very unfortunate. Football is a humbling game. As a football family, we will be there for him.”"
Sutton injured his ankle on a play in the first half against the Bobcats. He walked off the field was taped up but never returned.
With Malik Foreman suspended, the Vols appeared to be much thinner in the secondary.
However, Baylen Buchanan came in and for the most part played a solid game. It looks like Tennessee will work him into the rotation now. Obviously, Emmanuel Moseley is going to be on one side.
Rashaan Gaulden and Foreman have to play nickel, although Gaulden can rotate.
However, with Justin Martin also battling injuries, Buchanan is going to have to step up as a freshman now.
He was the first guy to earn his helmet stripe removal in camp. Now, the former three-star has to grow up a lot quicker than he expected to.
As a freshman, that could be tough. But it’s a huge opportunity. And maybe Sutton could be back sooner rather than later.
