A Look at All the Trash Talk the Florida Gators Have Delivered the Tennessee Vols Over the Past Year

The Florida Gators have been talking trash about Tennessee since their 28-27 win in 2015. Here is everything they have said about the Volunteers since then.

It’s been a long year for Tennessee football fans ever since the Florida Gators came back from 13 points down, and converted five fourth downs, to beat the Vols 28-27 in The Swamp.

Heck, it’s been a long 12 years since the Vols last one a game in the series, but that was the worst loss of the 11-game losing streak by far.

And since then, Florida players, coaches, and writers have not let Tennessee forget it.

Here is a look at all the trash talk they have delivered towards the Vols since that victory.

Immediately after their thrilling victory over the Vols last year, McElwain made his way out to shake Butch Jones’s hand with a sympathetic expression on his face. Then the trash talk began as he walked away. McElwain praised his players for playing their hearts out, admitted that he’s not sure they deserved to win, and delivered this damning quote: “You just don’t lose to Tennessee and they didn’t.”

  • April, 2016-Jalen Tabor trashes Vols for being favored to win SEC East

Florida cornerback Jalen Tabor, who didn’t even play against Tennessee in 2015, took to Twitter to trash media outlets  in the Spring for picking the Vols to win the SEC East. He then trolled Jalen Hurd and Jalen Reeves-Maybin with this tweet.

Hurd and Reeves-Maybin responded by laughing at Tabor’s need for attention.

  • June, 2016-Quincy Wilson and Jalen Tabor troll Vols on Twitter

As the Cavs were initially struggling against the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, Florida cornerback Quincy Wilson decided to give his commentary. It turned into a few jokes against the Vols.

Wilson responded with a laugh.

In Tennessee’s favor, we would like to note that the Cavs did come back to win that series after a 3-1 deficit.

At SEC Media Days, Florida linebacker Jarrad Davis got in on the action. When asked about the Vols, here was his exact quote: ‘It’s always one of the funnest games of the year because we win.

Just a week after SEC Media Days, Jalen Tabor returned to his tradition of trash-talking the Vols once again. Tabor said that the Gators took it personal not being the favorite to win the East despite their 11-game losing streak. Here’s what he said about Tennessee:

"“I mean, I don’t know how many times you have to beat somebody over 10 years plus in a row for them to just really own up. It’s just, I mean, I’ve never been beaten 11 years in a row by one team or one person, so I wouldn’t know how that feels.…Tennessee is one of those teams like no matter how much they get up on us, we just feel like we’re gong to win that game at the end of the day.”"

  • August, 2016-Jalen Tabor trashes the Vols on Paul Finebaum

If you thought Jalen Tabor could stop, you were wrong. He went on Paul Finebaum a month after those July comments to talk about how much the Florida Gators own the Vols again. Finebaum tweeted all the quotes, so here they are in order.

  • September, 2016-Gators columnist Pat Dooley: Tennessee the ‘Kardashians’ of football

Yes, you heard that right. Even a sportswriter got in on the action. In the week leading up to this game, Dooley went on Paul Finebaum and said Tennessee is like the Kardashians of college football.

To be fair, he has a point with the Vols generating lots of hype. But they have indeed accomplished a lot in their history. So the comment was a little unfair.

And this time, Quincy Wilson was back in the news. He guaranteed a Florida victory over the Vols early in the week before the game. Here was his exact, odd quote.

"“Have you ever seen a duck pull a truck? Ducks don’t pull trucks. Nobody has ever seen a duck pull a truck.…Florida Gators are going to win, simple as that.”"

Apparently, Tennessee is the duck and Florida is the truck.

Final Take

As you can see, the Florida Gators have taken a lot of shots at the Vols over the past year, from the coaches to the media to the players.

However, it’s up to Tennessee to finally end the trash talk.

Remember, Steve Spurrier talked a lot of trash about the Vols in 1997. But he backed it up by beating Peyton Manning again. Still, his talk ended after the Vols won in 1998.

So there’s a very easy way to end the trash talk. And Tennessee, who has a long history of losing to Florida after they trash talk them, has to do that on the field Saturday at Neyland Stadium.
