Teams Still in the College Football Playoff Hunt

Washington Huskies

They may be undefeated, and they may have beaten the Stanford Cardinal, but the Washington Huskies have a very easy road the rest of the way. So if four of the teams ahead of here remain undefeated, which is possible, they’ll be the ones left out.

Wisconsin Badgers

The Wisconsin Badgers have complete control of their own destiny in the Big Ten even after losing to the Michigan Wolverines. Winning out would likely put them in the playoff, but right now no team with a loss technically controls their own destiny,

Utah Utes

The Utah Utes also have a loss, but they also have complete control of their own destiny to win the Pac-12 championship. They are in the same place as the Wisconsin Badgers right now, which gives them a real shot.

North Carolina Tar Heels

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ only loss is a non-conference game to the Georgia Bulldogs. But if they win the ACC, they would definitely be in contention for the College Football Playoff. So they’re in this spot too.

Virginia Tech Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies are in the same spot as the North Carolina Tar Heels. Both teams are in serious contention to win their division with their only loss as a non-conference game to another SEC team.

N.C. State Wolfpack

And now we come to our third team in the same spot. However, the N.C. State Wolfpack have a bad loss, unlike the other two, to the East Carolina Pirates. But they still only have one loss, so they’re technically in it.

Baylor Bears

They are undefeated, and if they win out, they’ll move ahead of all these teams. But they don’t deserve it. The Baylor Bears have played an easier schedule than most FCS teams. It will go up when the rest of the Big 12 season hits, but their schedule is still embarrassing.

Colorado Buffaloes

Even in a loss, the Colorado Buffaloes are in the position they need to be in right there. They obviously aren’t likely to win out, but they technically control their own destiny to stay in the race, so we have them here.

Other teams with a long-shot: These teams need more help but are still in it.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas is better than most teams on this page, but they don’t control their own destiny to win the conference. That’s a huge deal. However, they are in the best spot here if they win out because the Texas A&M Aggies could easily lose twice.

Louisville Cardinals

The Louisville Cardinals are still one of the Top 10 teams in college football. And they should replace Clemson here. But they blew that game. And unfortunately, they don’t control their own destiny in the ACC. So they’re in trouble.

Florida Gators

The Florida Gators have a division loss in their conference just like Louisville and Arkansas. Unfortunately, the team they lost to is much less likely to blow its division lead at this point. And the SEC East is too weak to get to the playoff with a divisional loss. So they could be in trouble.

Arizona State Sun Devils

The Arizona State Sun Devils have played one of the easiest schedules and lost their only decent game against the USC Trojans. However, they are in the Pac-12 South and could still win the conference. But they have a pretty low chance too.

Western Michigan Broncos

Now we’re onto the undefeated Group of Five teams technically in it but who don’t deserve to be. The Western Michigan Broncos are the first team on this list. If they win the MAC, they’ll be in the conversation. But they won’t deserve it.

Boise State Broncos

Another Broncos team is on this list, and it’s the usual suspect. Boise State usually plays tougher schedules, though, when they go undefeated. This year, it’s been awful. Still, by being undefeated they’re in the race.

Air Force Falcons

Air Force has played far and away the easiest schedule among the Group of Five teams, and it shows very few signs of getting better. So even if they go undefeated, they don’t even deserve a spot in a New Years Six game. But they are still technically in it.
