Today on Rocky Top: Vols Injuries, Schemes, Volleyball, Athletic Budget

Tennessee football injuries and offensive schemes, volleyball, and the athletic budget headline the Volunteers news on Rocky Top for Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016.

Happy Thursday everybody! The weekend is almost here, and Vols fans are ready to see if their magical season on Rocky Top can continue.

There are a couple of exciting lower-level college football games to kick off the week tonight, including Memphis and Temple.

As we hit the middle of October, the heart of football season is here. And Vols fans couldn’t ask to be in a better position than they are in right now.

The news today, though, is not all great news for the football team. We have to get to some injuries. However, there is some good news in other areas of Tennessee athletics.

Like we always do, let’s get to the football stories first.

Vols won’t have Reeves-Maybin or Kirkland vs Texas A&M – Fox Sports

"Tennessee will again be without injured linebackers Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Darrin Kirkland Jr. when the ninth-ranked Volunteers play at Texas A&M on Saturday.Vols coach Butch Jones said Wednesday that Reeves-Maybin wouldn’t play against the eighth-ranked Aggies (5-0, 3-0 SEC). Jones said Wednesday night on his ”Vol Calls” radio show that Kirkland also would be sidelined for the Texas A&M game."

Vols offense getting more vertical – Wes Rucker of 247Sports

"Tennessee’s offense is still centered around its running game, as one would expect with a quarterback like Joshua Dobbs and running backs like juniors Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara.But the Vols have been better at stretching the field this season, and offensive coordinator Mike DeBord said he expected to make even more explosive plays in the passing game last week at Georgia."

Volleyball defeats Troy 3-0 in last non-conference match – UTSports

"The Tennessee Volunteers defeated Troy 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) in their final non-conference match of the season Wednesday at Trojan Arena.Junior outside hitter Kendra Turner led the Vols (11-6) with a season-high 13 kills to go along with five digs, four blocks and an ace."

UT Athletics reports $12.2 million during last fiscal year – WBIR

"The University of Tennessee Athletics Department reported total operating revenues of $136.2 million compared to total operating expenditures of $124 million for the 2015-2016 fiscal year, which generated a net surplus of $12.2 million.UT Athletics received a record $30.7 million through fundraising in annual unrestricted cash donations, according to a school release."
