Tennessee Football: Vols Lose to South Carolina Gamecocks 24-21

Tennessee football suffered its worst loss of the season. The Volunteers had a 24-21 embarrassment at the hands of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Butch Jones and Tennessee football are in trouble. The Vols lost to Will Muschamp’s South Carolina Gamecocks 24-21 on Saturday in Columbia to fall to 5-3 on the year and 2-3 in the SEC.

Tennessee had three turnovers, all caused by Dobbs, and South Carolina cashed in with 14 points off of them.

Meanwhile, the Gamecocks’ freshman quarterback in Jake Bentley went 15 of 20 for 167 yards and two touchdowns in his first college start as a quarterback. Deebo Samuel was his top receiver with eight catches for 83 yards, while Bryan Edwards and K.C. Crosby both hauled in touchdowns.

Tennessee struggled to move the ball all night except for a touchdown on their first drive and one late in the fourth quarter. The other touchdown they had came from an Evan Berry  touchdown on a kickoff return, his first of the year.

However, South Carolina was enjoying a 17-7 lead at that point. After Tennessee cut it to 17-14 and got the ball back, Dobbs fumbled the ball, and a busted coverage led to another South Carolina touchdown to give them a 24-14 lead.

Dobbs also had a first-half interception that led to a touchdown pass from Bentley.

Then, when the Vols got the ball back late in the game, he threw another interception. South Carolina ran some clock, got a first down, and pinned the Vols on their own 14-yard line with 45 seconds left.

Tennessee got to the South Carolina 40, but no more. Aaron Medley missed a 58-yard field goal as time expired.

Dobbs finished the game 12 of 26 with 161 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also had 12 carries for 27 yards and a fumble.

John Kelly led the Vols in rushing with 14 carries for 94 yards, Jauan Jennings led in receiving with three receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Derek Barnett picked up two and a half sacks in the game and is now only three and a half sacks away from Reggie White’s school record.

With the loss, the Vols are likely out of SEC East contention now and certainly out of College Football Playoff contention.

They also fell to 0-5 all-time against Will Muschamp, whose first team in South Carolina is now 4-4.
