Tennessee Football: Vols Replace OL Coach Don Mahoney With Walt Wells

Butch Jones has promoted Walt Wells to offensive line coach for Tennessee football. Wells will replace Don Mahoney for the Volunteers at the position.

The staff changes continue for the Vols, and as Butch Jones hired Brady Hoke as the new Tennessee football defensive line coach, he promoted a new guy to offensive line coach, according to UTSports.

Walt Wells, who served as quality control coach on the offense this past season, is going to be the new offensive line coach. A Nashville native, Wells replaces Don Mahoney, who has been on Butch Jones’s staff since he arrived in Knoxville.

The Volquest staff reported on Twitter that Mahoney is parting ways with the program.

In Wells, the Vols get a Nashville native with more than 21 years of experience as a head coach. That includes stops at Eastern Kentucky, New Mexico State, South Florida, and Western Kentucky.

Here’s what Butch Jones said about Wells on UTSports.

"“Coach Wells did a great job last season serving as a quality control coach on the offensive side of the ball and we are looking forward to him taking over the offensive line. He has extensive experience as an offensive line coach and will do a great job with our players.”"

Jones announced the hire of Brady Hoke at the same time he announced the hire of Wells. Hoke will be the associate head coach in addition to defensive line coach.

Meanwhile, Steve Stripling, whom Hoke replaces, will stay on staff in a new role as director of football program development.

So with these new hires, it looks like Jones’s offseason staff overhaul is finally complete. He’s got a new offensive coordinator, a new secondary coach, a new defensive line coach, and a new offensive line coach.
