Tennessee Vols Morning Report: NFL Combine, Dobbs Scholarship, Grant Williams

Tennessee Vols going to the NFL Combine and a scholarship named for Joshua Dobbs lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everybody on Rocky Top! Tennessee Vols fans everywhere will have the chance to express their love for their program with a huge basketball game tonight.

But that’s not the only news coming out of Knoxville for this morning.

There is some football news too, both of which deal with Vols that just finished up their careers in Knoxville.

And we also go back to basketball for a bit of recognition that one player earned.

We’ve even got a bit of golf to bring you as well. But we’ll start with the two big football stories.

Tennessee sending six players to NFL Combine – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

After two straight years of nobody getting drafted, the Tennessee Vols are in great position to have numerous players drafted this year. That showed more than ever with the number of Tennessee football players who got invites to the NFL Combine.

"The University of Tennessee will be well represented at this year’s NFL Combine with six players attending.Defensive end Derek Barnett, running back Alvin Kamara, quarterback Joshua Dobbs, defensive back Cameron Sutton, linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin and wide receiver Josh Malone will take part in the combine, which runs from Feb. 28 through March 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis."

Tennessee basketball set to visit No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats – UTSports

After a heartbreaking loss to the Georgia Bulldogs in which the Tennessee Vols blew another lead, Rick Barnes team is now set to travel to Athens to face the Kentucky Wildcats again. John Calipari’s team will obviously be looking for revenge after the Vols beat them three weeks ago.

"Tennessee heads to Lexington for a Tuesday-night showdown with No. 13 Kentucky. Tipoff at Rupp Arena is slated for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.The Vols (14-11, 6-6 SEC) and Wildcats (20-5, 10-2 SEC) are meeting for the second time in three weeks. In the first meeting between the border rivals, UT picked up an 82-80 victory over fourth-ranked UK in Knoxville. Tennessee was led that night by 25 points from Robert Hubbs III."

Josh Dobbs has scholarship named in his honor – Rhannon Potkey Knoxville News Sentinel 

The North Atlanta Alumni Chapter is naming its annual scholarship in honor of Joshua Dobbs. Here’s what chapter board member Chris Ideker said on the subject.

"“We had never named it after anybody, but Josh impressed us so much throughout his career that somebody on the board suggested it. We thought it was a no-brainer because of all Josh has meant to the university on and off the field.”"

Grant Williams wins SEC Co-Freshman of the week – SECSports

Following a 30-point performance and a 24 points per game average in his two games last week, Tennessee basketball forward Grant Williams was named SEC co-freshman of the week this past week.

"Grant Williams, a 6-foot-5, 234-pound forward from Charlotte, N.C., and Robert Williams, a 6-foot-9, 237-pound forward from Vivan, La., were named SEC Co-Freshmen of the Week. Grant Williams averaged 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks against Ole Miss and Georgia while Robert Williams averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds and 3.5 blocks against Missouri and Florida."

Tennessee Vols’ standing at Northrop Grumman – UTSports

"Led by a strong performance from All-American Anna Newell, the Tennessee Women’s Golf team sits tied for 12th place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge.UT fired an eight-over 292 on Day Two at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, bringing the team’s total score to 590. The Volunteers are just two strokes out of the top 10 in a field that features 10 of 15 teams in Golfstat’s Top-25 Rankings."
