Tennessee Baseball: Vols OF Justin Ammons Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Tennessee baseball outfielder Justin Ammons has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the week for his play with the Volunteers.
Tennessee baseball’s unusually strong start in Dave Serrano’s sixth year as head coach can largely be attributed to some of the young players in the program.
One of those players is freshman outfielder Justin Ammons.
Ammons is a big reason the Vols are 6-1 right now and was named SEC Freshman of the week for the way he played last week, according to the awards released on SEC Sports Tuesday.
The conference cited his .471 batting average, going 8-for-17, in four games last week with five doubles, a triple, a .550 on base percentage, a .880 slugging percentage, and 15 total bases.
Those four games were all wins against the Loyola Marymount Lions, Seton Hall Pirates, San Diego State Aztecs, and UC Irvine Anteaters.
The final three came in the Tony Gwynn Classic in San Diego, where Ammons was named to the All-Tournament team from that event.
That’s because he went 6-for-12 with a .500 batting average and had four doubles, a triple, and five runs.
Against UC Irvine, Ammons became the first Tennessee baseball player to have four extra base hits in one game since 2012, when he had three doubles and a triple.
According to UTSports, Ammons is also the first Tennessee baseball freshman to receive SEC freshman of the week honors since Zach Osborne did it in May of 2009.
For the year, he is batting .393 through seven games with a .485 on-base percentage and a .679 slugging percentage, making for a 1.164 OPS.
