Sources indicate the Tennessee Vols have their AD. The UT Volunteers hired Kansas State Wildcats athletic director John Currie to the same position.

It looks like the Tennessee Vols have found their new athletic director, and their selection was a bit of a surprise.

With former Tennessee football head coach Phillip Fulmer and Tennessee-Chattanooga Athletic Director David Blackburn as the two favorites for a while, the program went over to the Great Plains to find another guy with ties to the university to bring home.

Kansas St. Athletic Director John Currie will take over the Vols in the same position, replacing Dave Hart.

Jimmy Hyams tweeted out the news on Tuesday morning.

Currie worked as assistant Athletic Director for the Vols from 1997 to 2008, serving under Doug Dickey and Mike Hamilton. Hyams noted that he is also young. He turns 47 on April 1.

He replaced Bob Krause as KSU’s athletic director in 2009 and oversaw a resurgence of the football program as Bill Snyder returned to lead it the same year he took over.

For the basketball program, he found Bruce Weber to replace Frank Martin as head coach.

And in 2014, he hired Jeff Mittie to replace longtime head coach Deb Patterson for the Kansas State Women’s Basketball program.

He has also overseen championships in other sports, particularly women’s track and field, while at Kansas State.

Currie’s administrative experience dates back to four years with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons before he arrived in Knoxville in 1997.

Wake Forest is where he completed his undergraduate studies, and he got a Master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in 2003 while serving as assistant athletic director.

In addition to Fulmer and Blackburn, Currie also beat out North Carolina Tar Heels Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham for the job.
