Coming off a great performance in the Tony Gwynn classic, Tennessee baseball is generating buzz. An analyst now considers the Volunteers SEC contenders.

Two years ago, the calls to fire Tennessee baseball head coach Dave Serrano after four years with the program were loud. After another disappointing season last year, the calls were louder.

And now, in his sixth year as head coach of the Vols, Serrano is actually working to vindicate Dave Hart’s decision to keep him around.

At least that’s what they have shown through seven games so far this year.

Currently, the Vols are 6-1, and they won all three games this past weekend at the Tony Gwynn classic. This is one of the youngest teams Serrano has had, but the talent is intriguing.

And it has excited a lot of people.

Their play won over Division I Baseball Analyst Aaron Fitt. Fitt said in an article on D1Baseball.com that it’s too early to know if the Vols can get back to the College World Series this year.

However, he did say he is ready to buy into this Tennessee baseball team as a real contender in the SEC.

"This is a really good, versatile lineup filled with exciting young talent and some quality veterans, and the pitching staff is deeper than it has been in a long time. Tennessee is going to be a real contender in the SEC — count on it."

Tennessee scored 30 runs in the Tony Gwynn Classic, beating the Seton Hall Pirates, San Diego State Aztecs, and UC Irvine Anteaters in the process.

Outfielder Justin Ammons earned SEC Player of the Week in the process.

Although the SEC schedule for the team will be brutal, the Vols’ prospects right now for this season look brighter than they have looked ever since Mike Hamilton fired Rod Delmonico.
