Tennessee softball stayed at No. 15 in the USA TODAY/Coaches Poll for the week of Feb. 28. The Volunteers also dropped two spots to No. 15 in the ESPN Poll.

They started the season 13-0 and were almost certainly going to move into a Top 5 spot after beating the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners. But two straight losses significantly lessened the chances for Tennessee softball to jump up in the rankings.

Ralph and Karen Weekly’s Vols 13-2 team remained at No. 15 in the USA TODAY NFCA Coaches Poll for the week of Feb. 28, 2017.

Meanwhile, they dropped two spots from No. 13 to No. 15 in the ESPN.com Poll for this week.

The drop comes just as they were poised to shoot up the standings.

Tennessee opened the Mary Nutter Classic this past weekend with a huge 2-1 victory over Oklahoma, who was in the Top 5. Then they beat the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and the Nebraska Cornhuskers to move to 13-0.

However, out in California during the Classic, they suffered a 3-0 loss to the Utah Utes right after that. Utah is a Top 20, so there is no shame.

But the next day they lost to the Texas Longhorns 4-2.

The skid kept them outside of the Top 10.

Currently, they are behind five other SEC teams in both rankings. Those teams are the Florida Gators, the Auburn Tigers, the Texas A&M Aggies, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the LSU Tigers.

And this weekend, they are set to host the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville with Southwestern Louisiana, Ohio, Jacksonville State, Delaware, and Bradley all coming to town.

Then comes a midweek game next Monday against Campbell before they begin SEC play next weekend, starting with a home series against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
