Controversy around the new Tennessee Vols athletic director and football staff hires lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, March 2, 2017.

Wednesday wasn’t as heavy of a news day as Tuesday was for the Tennessee Vols. Instead, there was some depression with Tennessee basketball suffering its most embarrassing loss of the season.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top, that pathetic loss will obviously be a talking point in our morning report.

But there is also some other breaking news.

One former Vol spoke out heavily about the school’s athletic director search. The hire of two football staff members is official.

And the Lady Vols also begin play in the SEC Tournament today. So there’s obviously a lot to get to. Let’s start with the AD controversy.

Former Vol Albert Haynesworth blast UT AD hire – Twitter

Haynesworth was clearly not happy about the fact that the Tennessee Vols did not hire Phillip Fulmer as athletic director. Here is a snippet of the message he wrote on Twitter.

"Coach Fulmer bleeds orange but after this new AD hire it should make his blood boil RED!!! I’m sick of UT being the laughingstock of the SEC!!!"

Tennessee Vols officially add WR coach and former NFL assistant – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

On Wednesday morning, they were only reports. But now it’s official. Tennessee football added Kevin Beard as wide receivers coach and former NFL assistant Tony Sorrentino as a quality control assistant to its staff.

"Beard, whose hiring was reported Tuesday by GoVols247, left Florida International to replace Zach Azzanni, who was hired last week as the wide receivers coach for NFL’s Chicago Bears after spending the past four seasons on the Vols’ staff.Sorrentino arrives at Tennessee with 13 years of football coaching experience, the past four of which he spent with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2016, he served as the Jaguars’ assistant wide receivers coach after working as the team’s offensive quality control coach over the previous three seasons."

Lady Vols begin SEC Tournament play vs Alabama Crimson Tide – UTSports

A No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Tennessee Lady Vols will begin the SEC Tournament against the No. 12 seed Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday afternoon.

"The game will be broadcast on SEC Network and will be available online through WatchESPN. Courtney Lyle (PxP), Tamika Catchings (Analyst) and Steffi Sorensen (Reporter) will describe the action for the SEC Network broadcast of Tennessee’s second-round game."

With a chance to still play their way onto the NCAA Tournament bubble, the Tennessee Vols pretty much ruined all hope with their worse loss of the year, a 10-point road loss to the LSU Tigers, who were on a 15-game losing streak at the time.

"Brandon Sampson scored 24 points and Jalyn Patterson added 22 as LSU ended its school-record 15-game losing streak with a 92-82 victory against Tennessee in an SEC game Wednesday.Sampson matched his career high when he scored 16 points in the second half when the Tigers (10-19, 2-15) outscored the Vols 50-36. Patterson’s 22 points were his career-high. He scored 12 points in the second half."

Seven Tennessee Vols swimmers invited to NCAA Women’s Meet – UTSports

"Tennessee representatives on the national stage include: seniors Kira Toussaint, Colleen Callahan and Michelle Cefal, juniorMicah Bohon, sophomore Madeline Banic and freshmen Meghan Small and Tess Cieplucha. All five of the Vols’ relay teams also qualified for the championships, meaning Tennessee will bring additional members to compete.The NCAA women’s championships will be held March 15-18 in Indianapolis at the historic Indiana University Natatorium. The men’s meet will be held the following week."
