Tennessee Vols Morning Report: NFL Combine, SEC Tournament, Baseball and Softball Wins

Tennessee Vols in the NFL Combine, the Men’s Basketball SEC Tournament, and baseball and softball lead the UT Volunteers news for Monday, March 6, 2017.

The Tennessee Vols’ men’s and women’s basketball regular seasons are over, baseball and softball are in full swing, it’s March, and football spring practice is right around the corner.

What does that mean?

It’s almost spring, and the doldrums of Winter are finally over! As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top for the first Monday in March of 2017, one of the first bits of major news revolves around the big April event known as the NFL Draft.

There’s also the postseason for basketball to focus on. And baseball and softball continue to bring good news.

But let’s start with former Vols making their case to go high in the NFL Draft.

Former Vols shine at NFL Combine – WVLT TV

Derek Barnett emerged as a star at the NFL Combine, but he wasn’t the only former Tennessee Vols player to do so. Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Joshua Dobbs have also impressed. Meanwhile, Alvin Kamara and Josh Malone impressed scouts with specific physical abilities. Cameron Sutton still has work to do.

"Barnett, who competed in drills despite dealing with illness, ran a 4.88 in the 40-yard dash. He ran a 6.96 three-cone drill, which ranked fifth among defensive linemen, and also clocked a 4.44 in the 20-yard shuttle. Barnett posted a 31.0-inch vertical and 9’9″ broad jump.NFL Network’s Ike Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew spoke on-air with Barnett after his workouts about his decision to work out despite feeling ill."

Tennessee Basketball opens SEC Tournament as No. 9 seed – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

The Vols will face the Georgia Bulldogs at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in the second round of the SEC Tournament after the Wednesday play-in games. Tennessee enters the tournament on a one-game winning streak, which followed a three-game losing streak.

"The winner between the two teams will face top-seeded Kentucky at 1 p.m. on Friday. Ole Miss beat South Carolina 75-70 at home Saturday night to set up Tennessee’s rematch with Georgia.Tennessee’s rally from down 16 points in the second half to beat Alabama on Saturday at Thompson-Boling Arena pushed the Vols (16-15, 8-10 SEC) up to the No. 9 seed, with a head-to-head tie-breaker over Texas A&M, which also finished with an 8-10 league record."

Tennessee baseball sweeps Norfolk State – Phil Kaplan, Knoxville News Sentinel

Dave Serrano has Tennessee baseball on a roll in his sixth season as head coach. He has now led the Vols to a 9-1 start after they swept Norfolk State over the past weekend. And the hero for the Vols remains a freshman named Justin Ammons.

"Justin Ammons singled in the 11th inning to give Tennessee a 5-4 victory over Norkfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.The freshman outfielder has played in all 10 games for UT and recorded a hit in every game."

Tennessee softball sweeps every game at Tennessee Invitational – UTSports

Ralph and Karen Weekly’s team got back on track after losing two straight games last week, and the Vols won all five games at the Tennessee Invitational over the weekend. They capped it off with a blowout win on Sunday.

"No. 15/15 Tennessee defeated Delaware, 10-2, on Sunday to improve to 18-2 on the season and finish 5-0 in the Tennessee Invitational at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.UT’s freshman third baseman Chelsea Seggern led the Vols with a 3-for-3 performance and two RBIs. The Texas native excelled in the tournament with nine hits, seven RBIs, and three runs in her 15 at-bats over the weekend."
