A former UT football player dying, Tennessee Vols baseball in the Top 25, and the Memphis basketball series lead Volunteers news for Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

It was a slow day for games on Monday, but the Tennessee Vols had a ton of breaking news on Monday. And that fills our Tuesday morning report.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top, the biggest stories in the program right now are the Lady Vols postseason, football spring practice, and the Tennessee Basketball SEC Tournament.

None of those things are part of the news for today. It was all just so unique, so we have many other things to bring you.

One is about the death of a Vol for Life, another deals with the return of a rivalry, and then there’s the resurgence of another sports program.

Let’s start with the football legend.

Former Vol Mickey Marvin dies at age 61 – Dean Hensley, Hendersonville Times-News Online

A Henderson, N.C. native, Mickey Marvin died after a long battle with ALS Monday morning. Marvin enjoyed a successful career with Tennessee football from 1973 to 1976 as an offensive guard, and he then spent 11 years with the Oakland Raiders.

"Marvin played for the Raiders for 11 seasons and was the starting right guard from 1978-86. He won two Super Bowls: Super Bowl XV in 1981 and Super Bowl XVIII in 1984."

Rick Barnes says Tennessee-Memphis basketball rivalry to resume – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

They haven’t played since the 2012-2013 season, but Rick Barnes appears to be working to return the basketball rivalry. It could return as early as the 2018-2019 season.

"Barnes said during his weekly press conference inside Tennessee’s Ray and Lucy Hand Digital Studio that he and Memphis coach Tubby Smith both want the series to return from its brief hiatus, but that neither program could get their schedules to sync for the 2017-18 season."

Tennessee baseball returns to the Top 25 – Collegiate Baseball Newspaper online

They haven’t been relevant in over a decade, but Dave Serrano’s Tennessee Vols are in the Top 25 for the first time this year. The Vols came in ranked No. 25 this week after they just completed a sweep over Norfolk State.

"Texas Christian is ranked No. 1 for the fourth consecutive Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum."

Tennessee softball dominates Campbell Monday – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols improved to 19-2 on Monday after destroying Campbell. Ralph and Karen Weekly’s team have continued to dominate with the exception of back to back losses a week and a half ago. And the hero of this game came down to one player: Meghan Gregg.

"The junior belted a grand slam to help the University of Tennessee softball team defeat Campbell 10-1 in five innings on Monday night at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium in UT’s final tune-up before SEC play begins."

Two Swimming and Diving Vols qualify for NCAA Meet on first day – UTSports

"Tennessee junior Liam Stone and sophomore Rachel Rubadue officially booked their spots in the national championship field with their performances Monday at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships."
