The Lady Tennessee Vols in the NCAA Tournament, future football schedules, and baseball and softball lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

Happy Pi Day! The Vernal Equinox is a week away to signify the start of spring, yet the Eastern half of the United States has been hit with winter weather and precipitation since this past weekend. And many Tennessee Vols teams have played through it.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top for Tuesday, March 14, there’s really no bad updates to bring you.

One team’s news deals around its postseason prospects. Another deals with its new ranking.

And then we deal with schedules.

Of course, one of those schedules is a football schedule. And since football is king, we’ll start with that news.

Tennessee Vols add Furman to 2020 football schedule – Andrew Astleford, SEC Country

Tennessee football added Furman as the second non-conference team on its schedule for 2020. The Vols signed a contract with the school and will meet them Sept. 19 of that year.

"Furman was 3-8 in 2016. It plays in the Football Championship Subdivision and belongs to the Southern Conference. Tennessee scheduled a home game against Charlotte on Sept. 5 of that season."

Lady Vols a No. 5 seed in Women’s NCAA Tournament – WBIR

Following a 19-11 record and a first round exit in the SEC Tournament, the women’s Tennessee Vols basketball team still earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A high schedule strength and major quality wins likely contributed to their seeding.

"The Lady Vols will enter the NCAA tournament as a 5-seed in the Oklahoma City Regional, as announced on the NCAA Women’s Selection Show on Monday.The Lady Vols will take on 12-seed Dayton on Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky. If Tennessee beats Dayton, the team will play the winner of the 4-13 matchup of Louisville and Chattanooga."

Tennessee baseball ranked in the Top 30 of both polls – UTSports

They entered the Top 25 of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper last week and moved up to No. 24 in that poll this week. Now, Dave Serrano’s Tennessee Vols entered the Top 30 of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association weekly poll, coming in right at No. 30. So the Vols are continuing to generate buzz with their strong start.

"The Vols have continued to climb in CBN’s poll since March 6, when the national outlet listed Tennessee at No. 25 in its Division I poll.Entering their midweek games on Tuesday, March 14, the Volunteers look to continue their best season start since the 2014 campaign, when UT began the year 12-0."

Baseball and Softball Vols have mid-state games – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee baseball and Tennessee softball are both ranked now in both polls after their strong starts to the season. Now, both have games tonight in the middle of the state of Tennessee. For one team, it’s the last game before SEC play begins.

"The baseball team (11-2) is playing at Middle Tennessee State at 7 p.m. EST in Murfreesboro as UT prepares to open SEC play this weekend.The 14th-ranked softball team (21-3, 2-1 SEC) is playing No. 2 Auburn in the Mid-State Classic at 7 p.m. at the Ridley Sports Complex in Columbia. In the first game of the doubleheader, Columbia State plays Trevecca Nazarene University at 4."
