Tennessee Vols offensive and defensive linemen developing, Volscars, and baseball and softball games lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

The warm weather really has a hold on the country right now, as the smell of spring is truly in the air. And for Tennessee Vols fans, it’s also the smell of football.

Our news on Rocky Top for today revolves around the trenches and how they’re developing during this spring practice.

Meanwhile, athletes from this previous season were recognized at an annual Tennessee awards show last night, which we’ll get to.

And there are some games on the diamond to get to.

Let’s start with spring practice updates.

Two defensive linemen impressing coaches this spring – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Going into this year’s Tennessee Vols spring practice, there was legitimate concern about the availability of defensive linemen. With so many people injured, it’d be hard to track the development of other guys. But it looks like Darrell Taylor and Jonathan Kongbo have really stepped up.

"Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoophas been really pleased with junior defensive end Jonathan Kongbo and sophomore defensive end Darrell Taylor this spring. One of those two has been really impressed with the other, as well.Kongbo said after a recent spring camp practice that Taylor has had a “great” spring camp, and that he expected the athletic edge player to have a “great” 2017, as well."

Trey Smith elevating OL intensity – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee Vols early enrollee Trey Smith has drawn major praise for his intensity. He got the best of Jonathan Kongbo in the Circle of Life drill last week, and new line coach Walt Wells noted he can ‘hit somebody in the mouth.’ Wells noted that the other linemen are raising their intensity because of Smith as well.

"“They see it. They understand,” Wells said of the returning linemen. “But Trey also understands there are some good players here and he can’t just go out there and roll his hat out there because I’m Trey Smith and win the job. But it’s created a lot of competition in the room and all positions because you are trying to find the best five.”"

The Tennessee Vols held their annual Volscars Monday night to celebrate their athletes of the past year. Highlights included awards for Joshua Dobbs, Grant Williams, and the Tennessee-Georgia game.

"The University of Tennessee gathered at the Knoxville Convention Center Monday night to celebrate the accomplishments of its student-athletes at the 11th annual Volscars.Everyone dressed up in their very best to walk the Orange Carpet and reflect upon the past year in Tennessee athletics."

Tennessee baseball set to visit ETSU – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols had a huge SEC series win over the weekend, their first of the season. Now they try to carry that momentum into an in-state midweek road game.

"Following Tennessee Baseball’s series win last weekend against No. 7-ranked Florida in Gainesville, Fla., the Volunteers travel to ETSU for Tuesday night action against the Buccaneers in Johnson City, Tenn."

Tennessee softball to host TSU in doubleheader – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols softball team has numerous streaks on the line Tuesday as they host Tennessee State for a doubleheader. At 35-5 and 9-3 in the SEC, they’re riding a 14-game winning streak. But also, the No. 17 ranked Vols have a 13-game home winning streak. And they have a 90-game winning streak against in-state opponents.

"The Volunteers recorded their third consecutive series sweep over the weekend, taking all three games from No. 20 Kentucky in Lexington. UT is riding a 14-game win streak entering Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Tigers, it’s longest win streak since also winning 14 straight in 2014."
