Tennessee Football Recruiting: Vols Offer Three-Star Florida Linebacker for 2018
Tennessee football recruiting continues in the midst of spring practice. The Volunteers offered three-star South Florida linebacker Rashawn Yates.
Just a few hours after Tennessee football got its third commitment for the 2018 class, the Vols extended an offer to another player.
Tennessee offered a scholarship to Rashawn Yates Wednesday out of Treasure Coast High School in Port Saint Lucie, Fla.
The Vols are the first SEC school to extend an offer. Yates’s high school tweeted out the news.
A three-star on Rivals, Yates does not have any national or state rankings. But he does have a nice size already, coming in at 6’3″ and 250 pounds.
He is clearly a hybrid player who can play linebacker or defensive end given his size and what the high school said about him.
It looks like he is a guy who focuses on being an edge rusher more than anything. Take a look at some of his highlights here.
As you can see, his strength is being a pass-rusher. But he clearly has some versatility, as he dropped back in coverage at times as a linebacker.
And he also lined up some at defensive tackle. His versatility is likely a big selling point for the Vols, and competing in the Sunshine State only helps that.
Currently, Tennessee football is competing with around 20 other schools who have offered him. However, only the Oregon Ducks have a profile even close to the Vols among schools that have offered him so far.
Oregon could be tough to compete with, though, given Willie Taggart’s connections to South Florida.
Then again, the Vols are closer, and they have Kevin Beard, Larry Scott, and Mike Canales with ties to the area. So they have a solid chance at Yates.
