A local football commitment to the Tennessee Vols, spring practice, and baseball and softball lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

We’re inching closer and closer to the Tennessee Vols spring game. As practices go by on Rocky Top, other sports continue to take the field.

And recruiting is also in full swing.

All of this news makes for an eventful April in the world of college sports. Let’s start with a recap of yesterday’s practice.

Tennessee Vols focus on special teams in practice – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee football held its 10th practice on Tuesday and put a heavy emphasis on special teams, according to reports. The Vols have four more practices before the spring game.

"The Vols worked on kick returns in two of the first three sessions at Haslam Field. They had players carrying a ball in one arm while catching a punted ball in another."

Tennessee Vols pick up commitment from local offensive lineman – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

Tennessee football received its third commitment Wednesday morning when offensive tackle Ollie Lane, a three-star on Rivals, picked the Vols. Lane comes from Corryton, Tenn.

"When Ollie Lane received a scholarship offer from Tennessee almost two months ago, he admitted he was a “huge Tennessee fan” and he was “astonished” to have the opportunity to play for the Vols.In the end, it was too tempting for him to pass up."

Tennessee baseball falls 10-2 to ETSU – Mike Griffith, SEC Country

Tennessee baseball followed up its surprising first SEC series win over this past weekend with an embarrassing midweek loss.

"The Vols (17-13) entered the game coming off a series win at No. 7 Florida, but the Bucs were more than ready, jumping on starter Kyle Serrano (0-2) for three runs in the first inning.“That wasn’t a very good baseball game for the Vols,” Coach Dave Serrano said. “We were not very good in all areas. Our pride is to pitch and play defense, and I think we fell way short of our expectations."

Tennessee softball sweeps TSU – Mike Strange, Knoxville News Sentinel 

The red-hot Tennessee Vols extended numerous streaks on Tuesday. They have now won 92 straight over in-state opponents, and they’re on a 14-game home winning streak. But most important of all, the No. 17 ranked Vols are on a 16-game winning streak heading into a weekend series against Alabama.

"Tennessee continued its mastery of in-state softball opponents Tuesday, overpowering Tennessee State in a doubleheader at Lee Stadium, 8-0 and 11-1.Both games ended by run rule."

Coleman, Gatlin to be honored by Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame – UTSports

"The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame announced Christian Coleman and #VFL Justin Gatlin as honorees at their 51st Induction Banquet.Coleman was named the 2017 Amateur Male Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. Gatlin attended Tennessee from 2000-02 and was honored as the 2017 Professional Male Athlete of the Year. The two Tennessee sprinters will be honored on Saturday, June 3rd at the Omni Hotel in Nashville."
