Tennessee Vols’ Sheriron Jones transferring, Phillip Fulmer on the quarterback race, and Holly Warlick lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, May 3, 2017.

With spring football and the NFL Draft over, we are closing in on the end of the athletic school year. And the Tennessee Vols football program still has a ton of news surrounding it.

As we get set to bring you the morning news on Rocky Top for today, that news includes football personnel, and it all surrounds the quarterback position. But there is lots of other news to get to this Wednesday as well.

That news includes an honor for Holly Warlick, another baseball win, and track and field and women’s tennis updates.

But with the Tennessee football quarterback always being the biggest athlete on campus, let’s start with the news surrounding that.

Tennessee Vols quarterback Sheriron Jones transferring – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

The Tennessee football quarterback race is technically down to four, with three scholarship guys, as Sheriron Jones announced he’s transferring. A former four-star quarterback, Jones was unlikely to beat out Jarrett Guarantano or Quinten Dormady for the starting job. So transferring was probably a good move.

"Jones, a sophomore quarterback who transferred to Colorado last year before returning to Tennessee just a few weeks later and getting a waiver to retain his eligibility for the 2016 season, has requested and been granted a release from Tennessee.Tennessee officials confirmed the initial report from recruiting analyst Ryan Bartow, who posted the information on Twitter."

Phillip Fulmer weighs in on Tennessee Vols quarterback race – Marshall Hughes, WATE

Former Tennessee football head coach Phillip Fulmer gave his thoughts on the Vols’ quarterback race between Jarrett Guarantano and Quinten Dormady.

"Fulmer, who was speaking to parents of Soddy Daisy high school football players at a fundraiser in Chattanooga, likes Tennessee’s two quarterbacks competing to be Josh Dobbs’ replacement."

Holly Warlick honored in Chattanooga – UTSports

She may be on the hot seat in Knoxville, but Tennessee Lady Vols head coach Holly Warlick is still earning recognition off the court for her significance.

"Lady Vol head basketball coach Holly Warlick was honored Tuesday as the 2017 Tennessee Woman of Distinction at the 32nd Annual Chattanooga Women of Distinction Awards luncheon at the city’s convention center.The event, which honors the area’s outstanding women, benefits the American Lung Association in Tennessee and its mission to prevent lung disease and promote lung health. Monies raised help fund medical research, advocacy and education efforts in Tennessee."

Vols baseball defeats ETSU – Phil Kaplan, Knoxville News Sentinel

The Tennessee Vols baseball team scored five runs in the eighth inning to win another midweek game against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Tuesday night.

"Jeff Moberg hit a two-run home run, and Tennessee cruised to a 9-2 victory over East Tennessee State on Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.The Vols (23-18) finished the season winning two of the three games against the Bucs (20-22). Both teams won at home and the Vols won last Wednesday at Smokies Stadium."

Christian Coleman wins fifth SEC runner of the week award – SECSports

The Tennessee Vols track and field star keeps stealing headlines. Christian Coleman generated buzz for his 4.12 40-time on Monday. Then, on Tuesday, he was named SEC Co-Runner of the Week.

"Tennessee’s Christian Coleman posted a time of 9.93 seconds in the 100m dash to take first place at the SEC Relays. The mark was the top time in the NCAA this year and tied for the sixth-fastest time in the world this year, regardless of wind. It is also the fastest time posted by an American this year."

Women’s tennis Vols set for opening rounds of NCAA Tournament – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols women’s tennis team got back to the NCAA Tournament after a two-year drought. They will head to the Duke region in Durham to compete in the opening rounds.

"The Vols (18-11) start the 64-team tournament against Big South Champion Winthrop (19-5) at 1 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Duke’s Ambler Tennis Stadium. The host and 15th-seeded Blue Devils (20-5) will face Boston University (11-10) in the other contest."
