Tennessee softball won its first game of the NCAA Super Regionals. The Volunteers defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 8-1 in Knoxville.

Ralph and Karen Weekly’s young team remain on a red-hot streak, and Tennessee softball moved to 4-0 in this year’s NCAA Tournament. The No. 8 seed Vols beat the No. 9 seed Texas A&M Aggies 8-1 in the first game of the Super Regionals Friday.

Matty Moss pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and one run.

Meanwhile, scoring on the Vols’ offense was spread out when it came to the eight runs. Jenna Holcomb was the star with a triple and two RBIs.

Holcomb, Aubrey Leach, Brooke Vines, and even Meghan Gregg all just had one hit.

But it was enough to drive in five runs. Leach, Holcomb, Megan Greer, Haley Bearden, and Chelsea Seggern all scored runs.

Cailin Hannon also scored a run as a pinch-runner, and C.J. McClain scored two runs.

Five of the Vols’ runs came in the bottom of the third to give them an 8-0 lead.

Texas A&M then scored a run in the top of the fifth to avoid a shutout, but it was nowhere near to being enough.

With the win, Tennessee softball moves to 48-10 on the year, while Texas A&M falls to 45-11 on the year.

They also took a 1-0 lead in the series over the Aggies. They are now one win away from going to the Women’s College World Series with a team that was supposed to be rebuilding this year.

And they only have to win one of two games at home against a team they beat two of three times on the road earlier this year and have now beaten three of four times overall.

Their next game against the Aggies is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday in Knoxville on ESPN2. And if necessary, the Vols will face them again on Sunday at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
