Tennessee football coaches are about to deal with a coach infamous in Knoxville. Lane Kiffin is hosting Volunteers coaches at an FAU satellite camp.
Florida Atlantic University is going to be hosting Tennessee football coaches at a satellite camp this summer. And the guy who is hosting it is what makes this a big deal.
Former Vols coach Lane Kiffin, now the head coach at FAU, is hosting the camp, has a camp set for June 5 that Tennessee coaches are heading to, according to a report from Patrick Brown on GoVols247.
The camp falls in between two in-state camps the Vols are holding.
Lane Kiffin may not be popular with fans, but Tennessee football head coach Butch Jones is making the right decision here.
Jones noted that the Vols are working hard to keep recruiting the South Florida area, and he’s right in that working with Kiffin at Florida Atlantic, they can help build their footprint there.
Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh and Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bret Bielema are also both expected to be there, and Illinois Fighting Illini head coach Lovie Smith could also potentially attend.
Coaches from those three programs plus Tennessee along with the Oregon Ducks and Vanderbilt Commodores are scheduled to work the camp.
Given all the controversy about satellite camps last year, Butch Jones may look like a bit of a hypocrite for going to one. After all, he wanted them to end and joined Nick Saban in that crusade last year.
But he was wrong then and always was. Now, he’s right to take advantage of them since they are in place.
What is clear with all of this is when you consider guys like Larry Scott and Kevin Beard on the staff, Jones is making a specific effort to increase Tennessee football’s presence in the South Florida region as much as possible.
