Tennessee football recruiting: Vols in running for 2018 juco DE
Tennessee football recruiting gained a boost with news on Wednesday that the Volunteers are in the running for junior college defensive end Dorian Gerald.
Butch Jones is still looking at juco prospect where Tennessee football needs them. And, as he’s clearly doing for the 2018 class, he’s adding his focus on the defensive line to that field.
Strongside defensive end Dorian Gerald tweeted out his Top 12 on Wednesday, and the Vols were on the list.
As you can see with the tweet, Tennessee football will have to compete with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida State Seminoles, Florida Gators, Oklahoma Sooners, Louisville Cardinals, South Carolina Gamecocks, Texas A&M Aggies, Georgia Bulldogs, Syracuse Orange, N.C. State Wolfpack and LSU Tigers for his services. And, as he said, they are in no particular order.
But he’s had offers from at least 20 schools, so to get in the Top 12 is a good start for the Vols.
A three-star defensive end on Rivals out of the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., Gerald is originally a native of Florence, S.C.
He comes in at 6’3″ 255 pounds. Here is a look at some of his highlights.
As you can see, the guy’s straight-line speed is pretty impressive, and combined with his power, it allows him to line up wide.
He also likes to lay some rough tackles on people, which is always a good trait in a defensive lineman.
According to the early 247Sports Crystal Ball, South Carolina appears to be the favorite to land Gerald.
But don’t count out the Vols depending on what their defensive line does this year. And with new defensive line coach Brady Hoke, they may be able to make some headway in some places they never were able to in the past.
