Football summer workouts, new Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello and a Christian Coleman record lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, June 8, 2017.

The official start of summer is less than two weeks away, and in the heart of the wind down of this academic school year, the Tennessee Vols have a ton of athletic news.

And on this day, the biggest news is not football, even though football news is on here. How often does that happen?

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top, a new coach leads the way. And there’s also a new track and field record to get to.

There are a couple of football stories as well, to be fair.

But baseball, of all sports, leads the way. We start with that.

Tony Vitello named Tennessee Vols new baseball coach – Melissa Erickson, WBIR

John Currie finished his biggest test so far since being Tennessee’s athletic director by finding the new Tennessee baseball coach. In it, he went for a 38-year old who has never been a head coach but has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters, spending the past four years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

"Tony Vitello will be the new Vols baseball head coach, UT athletic director John Currie announced Wednesday.Vitello will be introduced during a press conference Friday. He replaces Dave Serrano, who announced his resignation last month."

Tennessee Vols summer workouts under Rock Gullickson have begun this week. In response to it, the Vols have released a hype video that you can see by clicking on the link above.

"For the next couple of months, the Vols will be in the hands of first-year strength coach Rock Gullickson as they continue to prepare for the start of preseason camp ahead of the 2017 season."

Christian Coleman shatters a track record at championships – Taylor Dutch, Flotrack.org

Tennessee Vols track and field star Christian Coleman continues to carve out an amazing legacy in the sport. He shattered the collegiate 100m record in the first heat of the men’s semifinal at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a winning time of 9.82.

"With a light rain coming down over Hayward Field, Coleman shattered Ngonidzashe Makusha’s previous 100m mark of 9.89 from 2011. The Florida State NCAA champion also ran the record at the NCAA Outdoor Championships."

Tennessee baseball’s Andre Lipcius named 2017 Freshman All-American – UTSports

Dave Serrano may have had another rough year in his final year as Tennessee Vols baseball coach, but his first baseman carried on the tradition of Vols in the sport obtaining national recognition. Following the departure of Nick Senzel, Lipcius became the star as a freshman and was named a 2017 Freshman All-American by College Baseball Newspaper.

"In 2017, Lipcius was the lone Volunteer to start and play in each of Tennessee’s 52 games. He hit .275 with a team-leading 11 doubles and 26 RBIs. At first base, he was charged with just four errors over 470 chances, including 443 putouts, and helped UT turn 33 double plays – tied for fifth-most in the league during regular season play."
