Tennessee football roster: Projecting the Vols’ 2017 2-deep depth chart
Punter
1. Trevor Daniel
Entering his redshirt senior season, Trevor Daniel is arguably the biggest over-achiever on this Tennessee football team. The guy was a walk-on punter and beat out a fifth-year senior and highly recruited punter as a sophomore. He hasn’t relinquished that position since.
Last year, Daniel’s average took a bit of a dip to 44.6 yards per punt, and he struggled with consistency at times. However, he had 21 punts of 50 yards or more. He also pinned 28 punts inside the 20-yard line and had 29 fair-caught, two numbers that were improvements over the previous year for him.
Oh, and he had a 70-yard punt.
Daniel’s biggest thing this year needs to be developing more consistency. If he does that, he could be the best punter in football.
2. Grayson Linde
Trevor Daniel made a splash as a walk-on punter. So his backup being a walk-on is not much of a shock.
Grayson Linde is a redshirt freshman who has been working with Daniel to improve on his leg, and if Daniel goes down, he’s the guy who has to step in here at Punter U.
Long Snapper
Riley Lovingood
We have to name the long-snapper on this page, and that guy is obviously Riley Lovingood. This redshirt sophomore actually deserves recognition, though, as a long-snapper. He actually one SEC special teams player of the week last year against the Georgia Bulldogs because he caught a punt that pinned the Dawgs inside the five. That same drive, the Vols got a strip-sack touchdown. So Lovingood was crucial to that win and managed to become a star as a snapper.
