Punt Returners

1. Marquez Callaway

The Vols have to replace both of their main punt returners from the past two years in Cameron Sutton and Alvin Kamara. But the position still looks to be in good hands with Marquez Callaway.

Callaway broke out as a wide receiver for Tennessee football this past spring, and now he’s the clear-cut No. 2 wideout on the depth chart. But last year, he didn’t prove himself much in that field, as he only had one reception for 13 yards.

However, the 6’2″ 190-pound sophomore enters this season with much more proof of what he can do as a punt returner. Again, it was limited, but with only two punt returns, he had 114 return yards and one return that went 62 yards for a touchdown.

Yes, he averaged 57 yards a return! Okay, so they came against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. That’s still pretty darn impressive, and it’s why we have him at No. 1 on our depth chart for punt returners at this moment.

2. Latrell Williams

Latrell Williams was a breakout player this spring at wide receiver but was not able to find a spot in our two-deep depth chart just because of how deep the Vols are at that position. However, he still has plenty of talent.

And as a 5’11” 175-pound slot receiver, the redshirt freshman will likely see some action on the field as a return specialist this year. A speedster, being a punt returner is perfect for him. Butch Jones likes to rotate punt returners, so expect Williams to see plenty of action here as the No. 2 punt returner.

This is where we will get a first glimpse into how effective his speed is.
