Wideouts

1. Jauan Jennings

No surprise here once again. Jauan Jennings became one of the go-to wide receivers last year for Tennessee football and had the two best touchdown receptions of the season: the go-ahead touchdown against the Florida Gators when he burned Jalen Tabor, and the game-winning Hail Mary touchdown reception to beat the Georgia Bulldogs.

That was all done as the No. 2 wideout last year, though. This year, he is the clear-cut replacement to Josh Malone as the No. 1 wideout. At 6’3″ 205 pounds, the converted quarterback caught 40 passes for 580 yards and seven touchdowns.

2. Marquez Callaway

Yes, we have Marquez Callaway as the No. 2 wideout for Tennessee football going into the Fall. Once a four-star athlete as a member of the 2016 recruiting class, Callaway emerged strongly this spring, and he’s now ready to line up opposite Jauan Jennings to be a major playmaker on the outside.

Just read this article from the spring by Patrick Brown of GoVols247 or this one by Mike Griffith of SEC Country, and it becomes clear that Callaway is a rising star on the outside. So we have him as our projected starter at the No. 2 wideout position.

3. Jeff George

We’re doing four players on this page since two wideouts start. The No. 3 wideout should be Jeff George. A four-star junior college recruit in 2016, George generated a ton of hype with his 6’6″ frame. However, the 195-pound receiver only had one reception for 20 yards last year.

This year, he enters his senior season without having proven much. Even this past spring, he couldn’t stand out due to injuries. As a result, we think he’ll be a factor in the rotation, but George will not start at either wideout position.

4. Brandon Johnson

A 6’2″ 180-pound sophomore, Brandon Johnson is similar to Marquez Callaway in that he could line up on the slot or at wideout. However, we’ll get to why the slot position is blocked off. That moves Johnson over here.

As a freshman he caught seven passes for 93 yards and showed flashes of what he could be. However, he missed most of the spring while Callaway shined. Add the veteran talent in Jennings and George, and Johnson is clearly going to be the fourth wideout on the Tennessee football depth chart.
