Tennessee football recruiting: Three-star in-state 2018 Cornerback Shatar McClay decommits from Vols
Tennessee football’s 2018 recruiting class took a hit Thursday. Three-star cornerback Shatar McClay is announced his decommitment from the Volunteers.
Now this is the moment when Tennessee football fans all begin to freak out. And given the history of the Vols, they are a bit justified in doing it.
The 2018 recruiting class is now back down to 12 people after 2018 three-star in-state cornerback Shatar McClay reopened his recruiting process.
McClay announced his decommitment from the Tennessee football program on Twitter.
A 5’11” 175-pound prospect out of Clarksville, Tenn., McClay didn’t draw any national rankings. He was considered an athlete as well having played wide receiver.
And he is the No. 25 ranked player in the state.
As a result, this is not a huge loss. No disrespect to McClay, but the Vols were competing with the likes of the Indiana Hoosiers and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to get him in the first place.
Other schools in play include the UMASS Minutemen, the Purdue Boilermakers, the Memphis Tigers, and even the Samford Bulldogs.
The only other SEC teams that have received even a mention on any service are the Kentucky Wildcats and Texas A&M Aggies.
So losing him shouldn’t drop the Vols’ rankings too much. And since they are on the precipice of potentially locking up a plethora of elite recruits over the weekend, this is nothing to really panic about.
With commitments from secondary players Brendon Harris, Brandon Cross, and Tanner Ingle, there’s a good chance the competition was just too great there in this class anyway.
And there’s only speculation about the other people Jones and his staff are eyeing at this moment.
Nobody should really begrudge McClay’s commitment because he probably is indeed doing what is best for him in this situation.
