Former Tennessee Vols on Pat Summitt a year after her death and John Currie on Phillip Fulmer lead the Volunteers news for Friday, June 23, 2017.

It’s the first Friday of summer! That means it’s going to be beach season like never before this weekend, and you can definitely expect Tennessee Vols fans to be leaving the mountains for the shores like everybody else.

However, there is lots of news on Rocky Top to catch you up on across numerous sports before you go.

We start today with a reflection on a tragedy. It relates to the approaching of a year since the death of legend Pat Summitt.

There’s lighter news with another Hall of Fame coach, as more comments come in about Phillip Fulmer’s new job.

And then Christian Coleman and Nick Senzel also bring news. But let’s start with Summitt.

Former Lady Vols speak on Pat Summitt – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel

We’re approaching nearly a year after her death, but Pat Summitt’s mystique still towers over the Tennessee Vols program. And former Lady Vols are continuing to comment on the impact she made on their lives.

"Whenever former Tennessee women’s basketballplayers meet, they’re apt to convene a hearty sort of gathering.“We talk longer and hug harder,” former Lady Vols point guard Pam Marr said.“Even laugh a little more,” former guard Nikki (Caldwell) Fargas said."

 John Currie on working with Phillip Fulmer again – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Tennessee Vols athletic director John Currie and Phillip Fulmer have had a documented rocky relationship in the past. But in Fulmer’s new role as special adviser to UT president, the two have worked to bring unity. And Currie gave his own take on that.

"“I have enormous respect and appreciation for Coach Fulmer, and candidly he changed my life because of the experiences that I had when I was here in my first tenure, because of the success and visibility of our football program. I think this is a really, really special day for everyone. Once again, he shows his leadership for the university, as well as the athletics program and the football program.”"

After a historic track and field season, Tennessee Vols star Christian Coleman continues to get national recognition. He is now one of three finalists alongside Fred Kerley and Lindon Victor, both of the Texas A&M Aggies, for the award, given to the best male athlete in track and field each year.

"Coleman returned from competing in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on a two-fold mission: To break records and leave no doubt he was the best short-distance sprinter at the collegiate level.The junior from Atlanta, Georgia, told his coaches that he wanted to complete the sprint double-double, which meant he’d win the 60- and 200-meter titles indoors and 100- and 200-meter titles outdoors."

Former Vol Nick Senzel promoted to Double-A – C. Trent Rosencrans, The Cincinnati Enquirer

Nick Senzel played under Dave Serrano for the Tennessee Vols baseball program from 2014 to 2016. Now, the second pick of the 2016 MLB Draft is one step closer to the Major Leagues, as he was just promoted to Pensacola in Double-A.

"Senzel, who turns 22 next week, hit .305/.371/.476 at Daytona with four home runs and 31 RBI. He also hit 26 doubles in his 62 games with the Tortugas."
