Tennessee football offensive coordinator Larry Scott is expected to keep Butch Jones’s system. But he did say the Volunteers would go under center more.
Even though Butch Jones hates the term spread offense, that seems to be what Tennessee football has been running ever since he arrived in Knoxville. However, he has used pro-style schemes with it.
The biggest reason it looks like the spread is simply because he runs all the plays from shotgun.
Well, it looks like new Vols offensive coordinator Larry Scott could change that. Scott, in an interview he did with Jimmy Hyams on WNML, said the Vols would go under center ‘a little bit more’ now.
"“Probably a little bit more, being more balanced and those type of things with under center and in the gun,” Scott said. “One of the things we really want to continue to do here and rev up and get better at it is just the overall development of the football player, and a lot of that comes through your system and how you play.”"
Scott noted in the interview that balance is incredibly important, which is probably why he talked about going under center more.
Also, a quarterback like Quinten Dormady could fare better under center. Jarrett Guarantano is a different story, but Dormady still looks like the leader right now.
Again, Tennessee football is better prepared to do it than other schools that may appear to run a form of the spread offense simply because of the blocking schemes and the routes Butch Jones’s system includes.
It’s likely not going to require as much of an issue to get under center, and on short-yardage situations, it’ll probably help the Vols.
After all, they’ve had major issues for a while converting on 3rd and short and fourth and short from the shotgun.
So perhaps going under center more is exactly what they need to be more consistent on offense.
