Tennessee football’s lone five-star for 2018, in-state offensive lineman Cade Mays, predicts the Volunteers will finish with the No. 1 recruiting class.

Tennessee football 2018 commit Cade Mays represents everything Butch Jones is trying to do for the Vols’ recruiting class.

He is an elite in-state prospect, helps to shore up the trenches, and keeps the strong message out there that Tennessee is recruiting well.

Meanwhile, his confidence in the Vols class only continues to grow.

Mays, who committed to Tennessee nearly two years ago, said on Friday in an interview on WNML that the Vols would have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Given his quote, you’d think he was onto something nobody else was. After all, here’s what he said.

"“For all the Vols fans out there let me just tell you it’s going to be the No. 1 class.”"

He then confirmed his belief in that with a tweet on Sunday.

This does seem extremely confident. But is it possible? Well, right now Tennessee football has a top 5 recruiting class across most services.

On top of that, there is a plethora of elite in-state talent that the Vols haven’t yet secured commitments from.

However, they seem to be in play for a lot of them, so if they do get those commitments, the class could definitely shoot up to No. 1.

As a result, Mays’s comments aren’t completely out of left field. And it would be a great way for Butch Jones to redeem himself after the 2017 class.

Over this past weekend, he spent his time building depth for what he needs. It looks like his big scores are right around the corner.

After two straight top 5 classes in 2014 and 2015, a No. 1 class in 2016 would do wonders for his job security.

But more than that, it would do wonders for a Tennessee football program desperate for good news.
